For Simon (On Your Birthday)

The day arrived.
The sun grew high,
Covered by clouds,
In a warm, wet sky.

It seemed no different here, you see.
The birds were singing in their trees,
But this is the day your soul set free.
This is the day you came to me.

I'd thought of you for many nights.
Sleepless in the full moonlight,
I read of the Buddha, his mother's dreams,
And a prince the world had never seen.

Now here you are, at three-foot-three,
I’ll sing for you and kiss your feet.
For a boy so big, you sure are small.
To me, the sweetest one of all.

Bacon, pancakes, every day,
I wake to see your shining face.
You've brought me joy in all you do,
My heart so rich with love for you.

Some day I'll leave you— this is true.
But I’ll never be too far from you.
There's nothing that I quite enjoy
Like resting my head on the softest boy.

So I'll tell now, while we’re still here.
That I will always keep you near.
No length of space, no span of time,
Nor death could keep your heart from mine.

So think of me when I am gone.
And remember that our love lives on:

The earth is but a hall of doors
Where you are mine
And I am yours.
