Jan 2016

For Simon

We're head to head,
In your little bed,
And I kiss you as you smile

I've stopped the day,
To come and lay,
With you a little while.

I count your toes,
And watch you grow,
More tired with every blink

I brush your cheek,
To help you slip,
Into a peaceful sleep

Now that you breathe so heavily,
You'd think that would mean rest for me,
But all I care to do is gaze,
Down at your bright and tiny face

I think of all the loves you'll meet,
Maybe four or seventeen,
I hope that one will treat you sweet,
Make you breakfast,
Fold your sheets

I hope she will feel proud of you,
I hope she tells you, like I do.

You see, my sun,
My heart's on fire
(It'll stay that way, till I expire)
My mind is mad with thoughts of you,
You light me up! (It's what you do!)

In you, there is a part of me
The greatest there will ever be

I know that there will come a day,
You'll likely push my lips away,
When you'll no longer hold my hand,
Cause you’re grown up, you'll be a man.

But I will always be right here,
To comb your hair or clean your ears
These hands were made to give you love,
To hope that it was good enough.

But now you're up,
I'll make you toast,
I'll kiss you on your little nose

Of all the boys that I have known,
It's you I’ve loved the most.
